Grain Free Hot Cereal

Not too long ago I ran across this bag of hemp seed at a local grocery store.  I grabbed it not having any idea what in the world I was going to do with it.  It’s just how I roll.  Act first, think later.  You gotta keep life fun like that, otherwise things just get boring!


So of course I came running to the world of my Facebook peeps and asked for advice.  I got several suggestions but nothing really jumped out.  I wanted something life changing! (ok not really)

I continued my search with my trusty old friend Mr. Google.  We’re great friends!   I eventually came across different hot cereal recipes.  That was it! So I jumped up and headed straight to the kitchen.  I knew I could wing something!

The unsweetened vanilla almond is becoming harder to find these days.  Is everyone else in the Camp Carroll trying to reduce sugar in their diets too? It can’t be!

Starting from left to right, we have Chia SeedFlax SeedHemp Seed, Erythritol, and Almond Milk.

If you are paleo you could add honey as your sweetener.

Erythritol is supposed to  have a zero glycemic index, meaning it shouldn’t affect blood sugar or insulin levels. It is safe to use for diabetics or someone keeping their sugar intake low for other reasons. It can help prevent tooth decay too!  Sugars are fermented by bacteria on the surfaces of teeth that results in tooth decay.  Sugar Alcohols are not fermented by bacteria so it won’t result in tooth decay.  Win!

So just mix everything together and heat until it thickens up. The Chia Seed really help this happen.


It needed something else after I tasted it.  So I added some Chopped Pecans and Sugar Free Maple Syrup.  Hi guys!

They were late to the casting call.  They are very sorry!


 TA-DA!  It all worked out perfectly!



It was very yummy and filling and good for you too! You can add anything you like.  Maybe some  Vanilla Extract (I didn’t have any) or Cinnamon! Go wild!


That’s kinda it.  Nothing too complicated here.  I like it that way.

Grain Free Hot Cereal

A grain free alternative to oatmeal or cream of wheat.


  • 1 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 cup hemp seeds
  • 1/4-1/3 cup sweetener of your choice. Adjust to taste.
  • 2 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds


  1. Add all ingredients to the pot and heat until it thickens.  

    Serve hot and enjoy.

Recipe Notes

Top with what ever you'd like such as chopped nuts, syrup, or cinnamon.
